After two lost opportunities, Ishan Kishan was offered a wonderful opportunity in India's last Test innings of the West Indies tour. When India decided to bat, Ishan was put at No. 4 in the second Test in Trinidad instead of the more seasoned Virat Kohli, the youngster returned the team's trust with a lightning-quick innings on the way to a first-ever half-century. Ishan told Rishabh Pant about the discussion that resulted to his score of 52 off 34, which allowed India to set a high target of 365 for the visiting squad.
Pant could have played the role of India's wicketkeeper-batter during the Test series, just as he did in the WTC final this month and the Border-Gavaskar series at home earlier this year. However, Pant was compelled to miss the game due to a tragic car accident. He has made significant progress in his recovery, although he will likely miss the remainder of 2023.
In his absence, Ishan served as the backup for KS Bharat during the home series and the WTC final against Australia until the management decided to award Ishan his maiden cap for the West Indies tour.
Before India declared in the first game of the series in Dominica, he was given the chance to bat in a Test. Later, in the first innings of the second Test, he was dismissed for 25 off 37.
